I'm so sad to hear that Rod has passed away. I first met Rod when I needed to get ahold of a Veteran in Vegreville who wasn't answering his phone and I had contacted the Royal Canadian Legion for help. Needless to say, thanks to Rod, I was speaking to him within 20 minutes.
I'll forever miss his quick wit, sense of humor and selfless compassion for others. Chatting with Rod and Joyce were the highlight of my day with their banter back and forth and I especially enjoyed Rod's trips down memory lane and his reminiscing with stories of the 'good ole days'. Rod was the type of person that when he asked you, "How are you doing?", he actually waited for an answer because his question wasn't 'just a platitude expecting a pat answer' ... he actually cared about how you're doing!
My sincerest condolences to Joyce and family.

Joyce and family: our condolences on the loss of Rod. I had the great fortune to work closely with Rod at AGT. He was always kind, caring, and a great, interesting conversationalist. Since leaving Vegreville more than 30 years ago, I would occasionally meet Rod in the grocery store during some of my visits to town. Our conversations picked up like we’d seen each other the day before. He was truly a good man.

Rod will be remembered by his co-workers at AGT/Telus as being dependable, committed, and a man of his word. He was willing to stand up and tell the truth using facts and data, even when criticism was expected. Active in the Legion, Organizations, Community, Local and Provincial Politics, and Labor Unions, his goal was always to improve the lives of everyone around him.

I worked at AGT/Telus in Calgary in the '80s and volunteered to help out in Vegreville for a few months. Rod introduced himself as "the good-looking" Rod Stewart. He made me feel welcome at work and in Veg. His humour was precious, often going right over some heads, which made it all the funnier. I will never forget him begging off a meeting because he had to "study for a proctology exam".
I noticed that he mentioned Joyce often and it was obvious she meant the world to him.
Canada was a much better place when Rod was with us. We need more people like him.

Dear Joyce and family,
We were deeply saddened to hear of Rod’s passing. We extend our sincere condolences to you all.
Rod and I first became acquainted in our mutual employment at AGT/Telus. Having worked under Rod’s mentorship, I quickly began to appreciate and respect Rod’s extensive intellect, his diligent work ethic, and his quick-witted sense of humor. After retirement, it was always a pleasure to meet Rod in the community where we would catch up on life.
He will be remembered with fondness and deep respect.

Rod was the kind of mentor who didn’t just guide a person through the work — he guided through moments, decisions, and challenges that shaped who I became. He was steady, patient, and generous with both his time and his wisdom. He had that rare ability to truly listen, to give advice that came from experience rather than ego, and to help me see strengths in myself that I might have overlooked.
What made Rod remarkable wasn’t just what he knew, but how he shared it. He never made learning feel like a burden; he made it feel like a privilege. His encouragement powerful, and his belief in me stayed long after each conversation ended.
Rod’s passing leaves an ache, but it also leaves a legacy — a legacy built from the lessons he taught, the confidence he inspired, and the kindness he carried into every interaction. The impact he had doesn’t disappear; it lives on through the people he supported, influenced, and cared about.
Rod wasn’t just a mentor. He was a compass, a supporter, and a steady presence. He will be missed deeply, but he will also be remembered with gratitude and respect for the ways he made others’ lives better.
My sincere condolences on the passing of Rod. May you find strength and peace during this difficult time.

The part of my heart that will always belong to Rod hurts hearing the news of his passing. From the first moment that I met him he became a very special person to me, we bonded over so many things and so enjoyed the verbal sparing we just had to partake in whenever we met.
The thing I know I've missed the most about Rod since I moved is the amazing hugs. Of course our greeting of Mr. Stewart and Ms. Williams and his sense of humor that would make me roll my eyes, like referring to my preference of small dogs as 'not real dogs'. Yet, I know that teasing aside we shared a mutual respect for one another.
Rod in my opinion is the epitome of service. Whether it be to the Legion in so many capacities, the community, the church or so many other organizations. He has given his time, energy and knowledge which has been recognized on various levels and will certainly be missed by so many.
My heart and thoughts go out to Joyce and the rest of the family.

Rod was thoughtful and generous in ways I have rarely encountered before. His mind and heart were ever considering how someone in need might be assisted,or how someone new in their position or new to the community could be supported. He was careful and diligent in his duties, as a worker and as a volunteer. It has been an honour to know him, and to have been guided by his deep reflections. Well done, good and faithful servant.
