Obituary of Rose Kowalchuk

Please share a memory of Rose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
KOWALCHUK, Rose (nee Ewanchuk) 1929 - 2026 When she walked into a room, she made an entrance. That smile, eyes as blue as the prairie sky, and a heart as warm as summer. Rosie was the 10th of 11 cherished children born to Louis and Nellie (Talarski) of Whitkow, Saskatchewan, and the last surviving member of the Louis Ewanchuk family. Small, mighty, and quick on her feet, Rose often credited her long and fulfilling life to the hard work of her early years on the family farm during the Depression. She attended Hatherleigh and Whitkow Schools and took special pride in her track and field medals. A nurturer at heart, she became the live-in babysitter for several of her siblings’ growing families, a role that led her to Ontario—a big adventure for a young woman at the time. These early experiences shaped the values she carried throughout her life: resilience, generosity, determination, and a deep devotion to family. It was the green, green grass of home in Whitkow that led her to the love of her life, Victor Kowalchuk. Beginning as schoolmates, they built a life side by side—raising four children, tending their farm, and creating a home filled with love and purpose. After moving to Willingdon, Rose attended SAIT and began her career as a dietician at the Mary Immaculate Hospital, later continuing her culinary work in Winnipeg. No one ever left Mom’s home hungry. Everyone was sent off with full hearts, full bellies, and often a care package or preserves tucked under their arm. In retirement, Rose returned to Willingdon, where she took immense pride in her home and yard. Her gardens were abundant, her flowers vibrant, and her lawn meticulously cared for well into her 90s. Even a simple yard clean-up wasn’t complete without sweeping the road in every direction. She had a sharp eye for detail and a quiet determination to make things just right. Her creative hobbies produced keepsakes now treasured by family. She followed sports with enthusiasm—especially curling, hockey, and baseball—and cheered faithfully for the Oilers, confidently predicting their success this year. She remained active and agile, including assisting riders jump their horses at Spruce Meadows from the comfort of her chair. Baba Rose cherished time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She could be found in the stands or on the sidelines—at hockey games, soccer matches, baseball diamonds, and dance recitals—always cheering them on. At home, she taught Canasta at the card table, sang her special songs, and gently rocked the youngest in her arms. Singing was plentiful, laughter joyful, giant bear hugs mandatory. Her greatest pride was her family and her 66½ years of marriage to Victor. She was a devoted and generous mother to Monica, Wes (Della), Bernie (Keith), and Janice, and a loving Baba to 15 grandchildren and their spouses, and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by Victor, her parents, five sisters, four brothers, and one brother in infancy. Rose was deeply loved by her extended family and known as a joyful neighbor and a fun-loving friend. In her final year, as her health declined, Rose’s strength and determination never wavered. She continued to rally, holding fast to her wish to live life on her own terms, in the home she loved. At the age of 96, her beautiful light quietly faded on April 22. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Slanina, Dr. Claudiu Iordache, the Lamont Health Care Centre, Dr. Racha Sabah, the Tofield Health Centre, her dedicated Homecare Team, and her physiotherapist, Rosanna. In keeping with Rose’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Vegreville with Fr. Jim Nakonechny officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Rose’s name may be made to a local community organization or a charity of your choice.
