Obituary of Walter Chernishenko

CHERNISHENKO, Walter December 17, 1928 - February 3, 2015 It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, Walter Chernishenko. Walter passed away peacefully on February 3rd, 2015 at the age of 86 years. Walter lived life to the fullest and will be remembered for his dedication to his family, friends, teaching profession, and the community. Walter's career of forty-four years was spent in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the NWT as a teacher, Vice Principal, and Principal. He was active in many sports throughout his life as a player, coach and mentor. He was also an active member of the Vegreville Elks Club for 35 years, and was passionate about volunteering and providing community service. Walter will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his five children, Dwight (Bonnie) of Regina, Sk.; Sheldon (Shandra) of Calgary, AB. their children Jennifer, Shaun, Laura, and Mark; Cheryl (Greg) Mazankowski of Delta, BC, their children Matthew, Megan, and Dillon; Dan (Carlotta) of Spruce Grove, their children Teri, Tyler, Laira, and Ariana; Kevin (Peggy) of Calgary, their children Candice and Katelyn; and his great-grandchildren; sisters Lillian Poole (North York, Ont.), Mavis Black (North York, Ont.) and his brother Edward Chernishenko (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.). Walter was predeceased by his wife Betsy in 2004; his parents Mike and Onesia; and eight siblings. A Celebration of Walter's Life will be held on Monday, February 9th, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Vegreville United Church, 5126-48th Avenue, with Reverend Carolyn Woodall officiating. Interment to follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Vegreville Manor, the staff and doctors at the Vegreville St. Joseph’s Hospital, and the staff (Unit 61) and doctors at the Calgary Foothills Hospital for the excellent and compassionate care that Walter received. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the “Elk’s & Royal Purple Fund for Children” would be greatly appreciated.
