We sat behind Bill at church (Vegreville United) and enjoyed our chats before and after church. Bill was a very learned person and so very independent!
Actually there were a few but very few times he allowed me to carry his lunch plate to the table at coffee time.
May he rest in peace.

Bye Little Brother, I will miss you so have to Remember you in my prayers to keep the many memories of our seventy nine years together foremost in my heart. And you had a big heart look at the Love and support you gave to Donna in all her health challenges. You were a true partner in a magnificent marriage providing a loving home to wife and daughters and at the same time giving so much to the community. My annual June visits with you in Alberta come to mind with your wit, humour and intelligence in these few weeks are great memories and the good times we had growing up in all our families struggles which gave you resolve to be a voice for Fairness and Justice and now inspiring us to keep fighting for Fairness.

I found in our shared conversations encouragement to continue the many struggles that we felt in common. These included the environment, because he was an active supporter of the Council of Canadians. The historical references had the same inspiration. The details may fade with time but the spirit will remain with me. I felt admiration for a person of courage.

I have had the great pleasure of getting to know Bill over the last couple of years, when he began attending Vegreville United Church. Whenever possible he joined in on our events and activities. He and I share a love for CBC Radio, and had many lovely chats together about the state of the world. He enjoyed a good game of Scrabble, and I will always now think of him when I play it on my old board. His praise or comendation was given honestly, so I valued it highly. He had great dignity and a desire to 'do' for himself to maintain his independence. I respect that in him. His was a tenacious spirit. I will miss Bill very much, and I know there are others at Vegreville United Church who feel the same.

May I express my deepest condolences from myself, and on behalf of the Communist Party in Edmonton. We have known Bill for a long time - in fact even within the last few months he valiantly overcame his physical limitations to join us for politcal events, and we are well aware of his consistent support for peace, social justice and human liberation. We will miss him.

Thank you to those who have posted so far about your times with my step-dad, Bill Askin. We really appreciate hearing about Bill's life in Vegreville, as all of his family lived in other places. While we visited him at his home sometimes, we never really got to know any of his Vegreville friends.
Here is a partial obituary that we are planning on running in the Edmonton Journal, for more information about Bill:
ASKIN, William R.
September 5, 1939 - August 19, 2019
Bill passed away on Monday, August 19, 2019 at the age of 79 years. Bill was born in Wainwright, Alberta, son of Thomas and Edith Mary Askin.
He is survived by step daughters Julie Asterisk of Slave lake and Bertie Mandelblatt of Rhode Island, USA, brothers Michael Askin of White Rock, BC and Peter Askin of Mayne Island, BC, niece Janet Askin from Edmonton and nephew Liam Askin in Calgary.
Bill earned his Masters’degrees in History and Education from the University of Alberta. He was very knowledgeable about the early history of the workers and farmers movements in Alberta. He wrote letters to newspapers all around the world in 1960 about "Project Cauldron" - the plan to detonate 100 nuclear warheads in the bitumen mines to get it to 'flow'. Bill was well known for his lifelong defense of Canadian sovereignty: he believed strongly in the emancipation of humankind from want, war & oppression, and made personal sacrifices in working towards a better world for us all. This was Bill's vision right up to the end.

I only knew Mr. Atkins for a short time through the Vegreville United church. Bill was a kind man and very intelligent. I found out a lot about history when I talked to him . He always won at Scrabble when Reverend Carolyn and I played the game with him at the Senior Luncheon. I also enjoyed teaching him to use Google at the library . I am very happy I was able to get to know Bill . Antoinette

Bill was an active member of our congregation at Vegreville United Church. We always enjoyed conversations with him as he was one who could chat about any topic. He will be remembered for his desire to be as independent as possible - he was a very proud man who liked to live his life the way he wanted.
He will be missed!
