BERNIE LUTZAK
I haven’t had a chance to get to know Bernie as well as some
of you. The short time I did know him revealed to me a warm,
compassionate, easy going fellow. It was only last January
that he joined the Hairy Hill Fire Department. He told me that
he had been thinking of doing so for a while.
A couple years ago, there were a large number of bales
caught fire at his family farm. It was a difficult burn that
insisted on rekindling. Bernie interacted with our department
watching over the smouldering mass during the night and
notifying us whenever it flared up. Our Fire Department spent
many hours off and on over a few days to finally put that one
out. Other than a corral being lost, there was little spread to
the fire, (in an extremely dry period) - buildings were saved
and the damage minimized. Bernie was relieved the threat to
the farm was eliminated and this is what got him thinking
about signing up with us. It took him a little while but when
asked if he wanted to join the fire department - he answered
the call. He wanted to help save lives and property in his
community. I wish to acknowledge this and express my
gratitude for Bernies’ willingness to sign on the line. The
position a fire fighter may, in the eyes of some, appear to be
a lowly one, but we who know the work which the fire fighter
has to do believe that his is a noble calling.
The funny thing about fire fighters is that night and day, they
are always fire fighters. Bernie dove in as a volunteer fire
fighter embracing training and pitching in around the fire hall.
While out on calls, Bernie willingly and tirelessly assisted his
peers to the best of his abilities.
More often than not, a persons most epic battle is the one
that you never see. It’s the battle that goes on within him or
herself. Such was the case for our friend and colleague
Bernie. That infectious smile and amusing and very frequent
laugh endeared him to all, but underneath was his secret
torment.
Bernie passing in such a tragic way is a reminder for all of us
- to be kind to one another, and learn to reach out to each
other when we are hurting. As individuals and as society, we
need to do better at that.
Goodbye gentle soul, Bernie. You will be missed. Thank you
for your service. We’ll take it from here.

So saddened by this news, Bernie was such an important friend for many years when I lived in Vegreville. He always made me laugh, was always there to help. We had some great times together. He will be missed dearly. My sincere condolences to all who grieve the loss of this wonderful man.

Goodbye to a very dear friend. I'm still in shock due to our loss. Bernie was more than a friend, at times we were like brothers. So many fond memories that I will always treasure. Gone is that great laugh of yours but that is something I will always remember. Goodbye my dear sweet friend till I hear that infectious laugh again.
