It is June 12 and sadly I just read that Elizabeth had passed away this February. I did not know she was ill…..I do not live in Vegreville anymore and had not heard. I would have loved to attend her celebration of life. I was Elizabeth’s junior high teacher. I remember her as a thoughtful, respectful student, a gentle heart. Over the years I did run into her and she was always so full of life and respectful of the relationship we had……years ago. She made me feel like a special teacher. I am sure that is the kind of young woman she was, thoughtful, loving and caring. My condolences and prayers Mrs . Hewko. You raised a beautiful daughter. May she rest in peace.

Every morning when I would go to the cashier's cage to give the deposits to Liz, my heart felt lighter when I saw her smile, and going to work didn't feel like work anymore. She would share with me stories of her life, and a few times she would make my jaw drop, by how crazy some situations got. The last time I talked to Liz I told her, this will be another crazy story for you to tell.
Liz's warmth and caring heart will never fade, and her life's stories will be remembered by many broken heart's. Her story ended way too soon, and she will forever be missed.
My deepest condolences, to Mrs. Hewko, and family.

I met Liz when I came into my position with FPP at the U of A in 2022. She was incredibly helpful in sharing her deep knowledge and happily contributed answers to all of my “what about this, Liz?” questions. Liz and I became fast friends. She appreciated my sarcastic humour and we had plenty of eye-rolling conversations. Aside from this, we also had conversations that revealed how committed Liz was to her position at the U of A and to her co-workers. Liz genuinely cared about us all. Personally, I’ll always treasure her response to upsets in my life such as when I broke my ankle and she was very concerned with my ability to cope with being a housebound invalid – “do you need groceries, anything! I’ll help you out with anything you need.“ This was Liz. Ever helpful, and selfless. Betty, you raised an amazing person who will be truly missed.

It was so sad to hear of Liz's passing.
My lasting memory of Liz was her and the other cashiers coming in to work on-site at the Administration building every day during the height of the Covid pandemic. She was a hard working and dedicated employee for Financial Services at the University of Alberta, and will be really missed by her "work family" at the U of A.

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Hewko, family and friends. I was so honoured to get to know Liz over the past few months at the cross. To say she was the most selfless woman would be an understatement. Liz was always so caring towards everyone.
I will deeply miss the visits we had on Fridays.

High School was a fine time for all of us I think. I was joyfully oblivious of the realities of the world. Two stand-out Liz memories were watching Forest Gump as a group at Liz's house, I think with almost our whole class. I believe it was shortly after her Dad passed away, and I remember pondering how close Liz and her Mom were. I always loved seeing the wall of photos when I walked past the house. The other standout memory was when Liz was learning to drive, and was carpooling with Ledawn and Barb to school in the morning with Betty riding shot gun. They were always sure to pick up whomever they ran into along the way. A few times there was not enough seats and I wound up riding the running boards. I dug this photo out of our wedding Album. A fine bunch (Joey Trottier, Justin Wieclaw, Ledawn Mitchell, and Liz)

Liz had a passion for the game of curling. When February and March came around Liz and I would talk about the Curling Canada championships in the office lunch room. How Alberta was faring and the other teams doing well at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and at the Brier curling tournaments. She even had a chance to meet a few of the curling competitors working at the cash desk. Will miss those curling chats Liz.

Liz had such an impact on both my work and personal life. She was always someone I could talk with, share with and I valued her opinion on all matters shared. She had the biggest heart and smile and her stories always brightened my day. She loved animals and had a huge role in which puppy I picked out all those years ago, and she always had a gift for my little girl, Autumn throughout the years for whatever holiday was happening. Liz was selfless and generous and should have lived to be 100, but the 46 years she was here, she spent them well and touched all our hearts, miss you Lizzie XOXO
