Obituary of Philip Leonard Malica

MALICA, Philip Leonard September 9, 1951 – September 4, 2024 Philip Leonard Malica passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love and support of his family, on September 4, 2024, at the age of 72, just 5 days prior to his 73rd birthday. Although his battle with cancer was brief, he faced it with dignity and grace. A lifelong resident of Lamont, Alberta, Philip began and concluded his life in the Lamont Hospital. After graduating from Lamont High School, he spent a year where he attended NAIT studying culinary arts. His success in the program was often humorously remembered through his favorite meal… ‘gourmet’ wieners and beans. Philip’s career was diverse and community focused. He worked at Sherritt Gordon, co-owned and co-operated Country Road Service, contributed as a farm hand with Malica Farms, served as a Bus Driver for the local school district, and provided courier services for the Edmonton Journal, Edmonton Sun, and Canada Post. Philip was deeply devoted to his family, the community, and to his faith. As a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Philip held various roles within the council and was instrumental in the Grotto rebuild as well as the ongoing maintenance of the cemetery and grotto. He also assisted the priests at the church and with services. His commitment to service extended to volunteering for the Terry Fox Run, the Lamont and District Agricultural Society, and delivering blood to the hospital. A man of great curiosity and a love for learning, Philip stayed informed by gathering news from multiple sources, reading extensively, and keeping up with current events. He was always ready for a healthy debate. A sports connoisseur, Philip was one of the few Maple Leaf’s fans in the region and an avid supporter of the Blue Jays. He had a deep appreciation for all sports and was always knowledgeable about the latest stats. Regardless of his job or the community event, Philip’s focus was always on the people. He was known for taking the time to chat, share stories, and go the extra mile to ensure that his work was done accurately and on time. Philip will be forever remembered by his devoted mother, Natalia; siblings Annette (Dwayne) Schultz, Brian (Betty) Malica, Rosann (Chris) Klita, and Kevin (Becky) Malica; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. Philip has joined his father, Walter Malica; grandparents John & Nancy Malica and Nick & Kate Kolodychuk; and great-nephew Jack Strauss in heaven. A Mass of Christian Burial to honor Philip will be held on Saturday, September 7th at 1:00 pm at the Skaro Shrine, Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, Skaro, AB. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may attend a viewing prior to the service at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers and gifts, Philip kindly requested that donations be made to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation Perinatal Bereavement Program in honor of Jack Strauss, the County of Lamont Food Bank, or the Skaro Shrine Church. Philip will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and unwavering dedication to his family, friends and community. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
