I was checking my sister Katharine Horton's obituary and saw Terry's. I have many fond memories of Terry in her work with the Vegreville United choirs. She brought such joy, love, and energy to everything she did. My condolences to all of her many family members and friends who must surely miss her presence in their lives. Terry Kubin was one of a kind - generous, gregarious, and many other 'ous' too numerous to mention. But a recent poem by BethLily expresses it best for me, when I think of Terry, entitled: "Curriculum for Peace", it reads:
What if we taught
mostly kindness
with a bit of math
instead of the other
way around?

"Everything I learned, I learned in Kindergarten" could be the mantra of the hundreds of young people who sang, played, created and studied in Terry's classroom. She was responsible for instilling in them the skills and attitudes needed to succeed in later grades, their careers and their every-day lives.
Terry was a dedicated, compassionate educator who gave her heart and soul to her job. I was fortunate to be able to work with Terry for many years, as a parent of two children who adored and admired her, as a teaching colleague and as her principal for 8 years. Throughout that time I was amazed at her boundless energy and optimism.
I am grateful that I had the opportunity to visit with Terry a week before her passing. We met in the parking lot of Home Hardware where she was going to select some flowers for someone to pick up for planting. And as always, she took a few minutes to talk. I had to admire how determined she was to pursue her passions in the face of adversity.
My family's deepest sympathy to the family on Terry's passing. No doubt she will be organizing choir and handbell practices in God's garden. May He grant her eternal rest.
